Best Way to Transfer from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5 at O'Hare

Connecting at O'Hare? Why You Should Know About the Terminal Transfer Bus 🚌

If you're arriving at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) in Terminal 1, 2, or 3 and your next flight leaves from Terminal 5, you might assume you need to take the airport train and go through TSA security all over again.

But there's another option.

O'Hare has a Terminal Transfer Bus (TTB) that can take eligible connecting passengers directly from the domestic terminals to Terminal 5 without leaving the secure area and going through TSA again.

And when we tried it ourselves, we discovered something we didn't expect: the transfer wasn't just convenient. The ride through the O'Hare airfield was actually one of the coolest parts of our trip.

In this guide, we'll show you exactly how the Terminal Transfer Bus works, where to find it, what you need to bring, what the ride is like, and what happens when you arrive at Terminal 5.

✈️ Why You Might Need to Transfer to Terminal 5

Chicago O'Hare is a huge airport, and its terminals aren't all connected in the same way.

Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected to each other, while Terminal 5 is separated from the domestic terminals.

This matters if you're flying into Chicago from another U.S. city and then connecting to an international flight.

For example, you might arrive at Terminal 3 on your first flight and then need to continue to Terminal 5 for your international flight.

At that point, you have two main options:

Option 1: Airport Transit System (ATS)
You can take the airport's automated train to Terminal 5. However, when you arrive at Terminal 5, you'll need to go through TSA security again.

Option 2: Terminal Transfer Bus (TTB)
If the bus is operating and you're eligible to use it, you can travel directly from the secure area of the domestic terminal to Terminal 5 without going through TSA again.

That second option is what we decided to try.

🚌 What Is the Terminal Transfer Bus?

The Terminal Transfer Bus, or TTB, is an airport shuttle specifically designed to help eligible connecting passengers travel between the domestic terminals and Terminal 5.

The important part is that the bus operates airside, meaning you don't have to leave the secure area to use it.

That means you can avoid having to exit security and go through TSA again at Terminal 5.

This can be particularly useful when you have a tight international connection and don't want to add another TSA checkpoint to your journey.

However, there is an important requirement: you need to be an eligible connecting passenger and show your travel documents before boarding.

📍 Where to Find the Terminal Transfer Bus in Terminal 3

We were traveling through Terminal 3, where there are two Terminal Transfer Bus pickup locations.

You'll find stops near:

  • Gate G17
  • Gate K19/K20

We had arrived closer to the K gates, so we headed toward K20.

Depending on where you arrive in Terminal 1, 2, or 3, use whichever TTB stop is most convenient for you.

🚶 Be Prepared for Some Walking

One thing we quickly realized is that getting to the bus stop can involve a fairly long walk.

Depending on which gate you arrive at, you could be walking 10 to 20 minutes to reach one of the Terminal Transfer Bus locations.

So if you have a tight connection, keep that walking time in mind when planning your transfer.

When we made our way toward K20, O'Hare was extremely busy.

There were people everywhere, and it really gave us a sense of just how much activity this airport handles every day.

🪪 Check In Before Boarding

When you arrive at the Terminal Transfer Bus area, you won't simply walk onto the next bus.

First, you'll need to check in.

There's a desk where airport personnel will verify your documents.

You'll need to show:

  • Your passport
  • Your boarding pass
  • Information for your next international flight

Once your documents are verified, you'll be directed to the designated secure waiting area.

We checked in, showed our documents, and then waited for the bus to arrive.

The process was straightforward.

⏳ Waiting for the Bus

Once you're checked in, you'll wait in the designated area until the Terminal Transfer Bus arrives.

When the bus is ready, passengers are called and escorted to the bus.

The bus arrived within a few minutes for us, and then we were on our way.

And that's when this transfer became much more interesting than we expected.

✈️ The Terminal Transfer Bus Ride Is Surprisingly Cool

As soon as the bus started moving through the airfield, we realized this was going to be a very different airport transfer experience.

Instead of traveling through a public airport road or underground tunnel, we were actually moving through the O'Hare airfield.

We could see all kinds of airport activity happening around us.

There were:

  • Ground service vehicles
  • Luggage vehicles
  • Airport trucks
  • Aircraft taxiing
  • Planes arriving at gates
  • Aircraft preparing for departure
  • Ground crews working around the planes

These are things you normally see from an airplane window.

But this time, we were right there on the ground among all of it.

For anyone who enjoys aviation, this is a pretty incredible experience.

🛫 Watching Planes Up Close

One of our favorite parts was simply looking out the windows and watching the aircraft.

We saw planes taking off, landing, taxiing, and being prepared for their next flights.

At one point, the bus even had to stop and wait for an aircraft to pass before continuing.

Normally, waiting for something at an airport can be frustrating.

But in this case, we didn't mind at all.

We were too busy watching the plane go by.

And then we had another really cool moment.

We saw an aircraft taxiing toward the runway for takeoff while our bus was traveling alongside it.

For a few seconds, it almost felt like we were racing the plane!

We were moving in parallel, watching the aircraft continue toward the runway.

Normally, you might experience a moment like that from the window of an airplane.

This time, we were watching it happen from the ground.

That was definitely one of the unexpected highlights of the journey.

⏱️ How Long Does the Terminal Transfer Bus Take?

The actual ride can take around 10 to 15 minutes, depending on airfield traffic.

For us, the time seemed to go by very quickly because there was so much to watch outside the windows.

From our experience, the bus ride itself was much more enjoyable than we expected.

What started as simply a practical way to avoid another TSA screening turned into one of the most memorable parts of our O'Hare connection.

🕐 Terminal Transfer Bus Operating Hours

The Terminal Transfer Bus operates daily from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Buses depart approximately every 15 minutes during operating hours.

Because schedules and airport operations can change, it's always a good idea to verify the current operating information with O'Hare before relying on the bus for a tight connection.

🛬 Arriving at Terminal 5

After about 15 minutes, we arrived at Terminal 5.

The bus drops passengers off right alongside the terminal on the airside.

From the bus stop, it's only about a 20-second walk to enter the terminal.

Once inside, you'll take the elevator up to the departure level, where the M gates are located.

And that's it.

You've made the transfer from the domestic terminals to Terminal 5 without having to leave the secure area and go through TSA again.

🚆 TTB vs. ATS: Which One Should You Know About?

If you're connecting through O'Hare, it's worth knowing the difference between these two options.

Terminal Transfer BusATS Train
Connects to Terminal 5YesYes
Operates airsideYesNo
Leave secure areaNoYes
TSA screening at Terminal 5No, for eligible passengersYes
Requires document checkYesNo
Best forEligible connecting passengersGeneral airport transportation

The biggest difference is security.

The ATS is the general airport transportation system, but taking it to Terminal 5 means you'll need to go through TSA security again.

The Terminal Transfer Bus is specifically designed for eligible connecting passengers who can remain airside.

⚠️ A Few Things to Keep in Mind

The Terminal Transfer Bus can be a great option, but there are a few things you should remember.

First, eligibility matters.
This isn't simply a bus that any airport passenger can use. You'll need to meet the requirements and have your passport and onward boarding information checked.

Second, allow enough time to walk to the bus stop.
Depending on your arrival gate, reaching the TTB stop can take 10 to 20 minutes.

Third, check the operating hours.
The bus operates during specific hours, so if you're traveling outside those hours, you'll need to use another option.

And finally, don't assume every international connection works exactly the same way.
Your airline, itinerary, immigration requirements, and current airport procedures can affect how you need to transfer.

🧭 Connecting at O'Hare Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

You will often hear travelers talk about how difficult it can be to connect through O'Hare.

And there's no question that O'Hare is a massive and busy airport.

But once you understand the layout and know your transfer options, the process becomes much easier to understand.

Here's the simple version:

If your next flight is in Terminal 1, 2, or 3

You can generally walk between the connected domestic terminals.

If your next flight is in Terminal 5

You have two main options:

Take the ATS Train:
Travel to Terminal 5 and go through TSA security again.

Take the Terminal Transfer Bus:
If it's operating and you're eligible, you can travel directly from the secure area of the domestic terminals to Terminal 5 without going through TSA again.

For us, the Terminal Transfer Bus was not only a practical option, but also a surprisingly fun part of the journey.

❤️ Our Experience

This was our first time using O'Hare's Terminal Transfer Bus, and we honestly didn't know what to expect.

We originally looked at it as a way to avoid another TSA screening.

But the airfield ride ended up being the highlight.

Seeing aircraft taxiing, watching ground crews work, traveling alongside planes, and even stopping for an aircraft to cross our path made the transfer feel like a little behind-the-scenes tour of O'Hare.

And if you enjoy airplanes and airports, you'll probably appreciate the experience even more.

Most importantly, though, the TTB can make an international connection at O'Hare feel much less stressful by eliminating one additional trip through airport security for eligible passengers.
